Finally starting to code PHP

With most of the set up done - though I still can't find where php.ini is on my computer - I saved my first .php file in my library --> webservers folder (and I view it in the browser at: localhost/firstprogram.php).

Learning about variables, commenting, and general PHP syntax. Going to spend another 25 minutes on passing variables through pages and a little bit about strings.

Here's what I get using mySQL Administrator

How do I know what to put in there? Do I need to create a brand new DB or somethign?

As Marc said above, MySQL AB's Mac OS X support has improved dramatically this past year or so, as evidenced by the spiffy MySQL Administrator application. Once you've got it installed with a simple drag-and-drop, you launch to a login window, type in your host, username, and password, and suddenly you have a spiffy GUI control panel for your MySQL server. And unlike other, similar programs, this one does not skimp on what parts of the server you have access to -- assuming you have the proper privileges for that host.

Grr....Installing Apache...

Flipped open Beginning PHP5, Apache, mySQL, Web Development and tried to ensure I had PHP, mySQL, and Apache all ready to go on my laptop. Confused by how to configure apache. http://localhost/ doesn't work on my browswer. So it's def. not working. Will ask Richard on Friday.

Ideas for personal scripts/dbs to build

I would like to set up a password protected script and database for a comprehensive 360 feedback exercise. I want to solicit feedback on ME from 40-50 of my closest working peers (in business world and in school). I would want to allow anonymous form entry and then be able to aggregate the data. I will then work with a mentor/coach to analyze it and build an action plan around it.

What This is All About

This semester (spring of my senior year in HS) I'm doing an independent study with Richard Kassissieh on mySQL, PHP, and web servers. I know basic HTML and the concepts behind software engineering and architecture (I did start a software company, after all!) but I've never operated at the coding level before. On this blog I will post my progress and experiments so I can keep track of things, so Richard can offer feedback, and so any random reader who stumbles across this blog can offer tips, too.
