You are right about the friends ratio! Another thing is that the types of friendships tend to be different. I have a good mix of expat/Japanese friends, but I tend to confide more in expats and in Japanese friends who have been abroad and have more of an international mindset.

My level of friendliness is tied to how comfortable I feel using Japanese, and that fluctuates dramatically. Sometimes I have dreams in/am thinking Japanese, and other times it just exhausts me.

You should definitely go overseas/learn a foreign language! The younger you are the easier it is.
